Pharmacovigilance Training

How can I get job in pharmacovigilance?

In order to pursue a career in pharmacovigilance, the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for the course is: A postgraduate or graduate degree in Bioscience/Life Sciences (with any of the following subjects: Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biotech) with at least 50% marks in aggregate.

What are the types of pharmacovigilance?

The following are several facets of AE reporting:

  • Individual Case Safety Report (ICSR) …
  • The activities involved in pharmacovigilance are: …
  • Coding of adverse events. …
  • Seriousness determination. …
  • Expedited reporting. …
  • Clinical trial reporting. …
  • Spontaneous reporting. …
  • Aggregate reporting.

Why did you choose pharmacovigilance?

This is where Pharmacovigilance plays a very important role in detecting, analyzing, assessing and preventing adverse drug reactions and in turn improving the patient care and public health by following stringent steps to curb unintended and harmful effects of the drug by dealing with every aspect of the drug lifecycle

First of all, the regulations are often hard to interpret certainly when it comes down to the finer points.

Second of all, if you get it wrong, you can be subject to a pharmacovigilance inspection, and you may eventually have your marketing authorization revoked for a Pharmacovigilance Training particular product.

So, there is an awful lot riding on having effective pharmacovigilance solutions to hand. As a pharmaceutical company, you basically have two choices: either do the whole lot in-house or outsource some or all of your pharmacovigilance operation.

There are pros and cons to both.

In-House Pharmacovigilance:

Pros – Pharmacovigilance Training Inevitably, in-house wages will be lower than using qualified staff. In-house staff already know the company culture and systems and will adapt quickly to running and working in a pharmacovigilance department. Where you have marketing authorization for many products in many territories it makes sense to have dedicated staff to deal with drug safety where a smaller company might be better off outsourcing their pharmacovigilance operation.

Cons – You need specialist staff in pharmacovigilance. You can get training, but where and at what cost? You will need a pharmacovigilance database that is validated, not just a spreadsheet in Excel or some Web site the CEOs kid knocked up in Access.

Then there’s the training – pharmacovigilance training. Would you like your staff trained by academics who don’t really understand the industry? Or maybe they should be trained by former regulators who have never had to work in a pharmaceutical company so their knowledge is only theoretical? Or maybe you could have them trained by someone who used to work for a pharmaceutical company who will have no real idea about what the regulators are thinking.

IMP OF Pharmacovigilance Training

Or possibly you could find someone who has experience of all three arenas who could train your staff, someone accepted as a registered presenter for Continuous Professional Development by the CPD Certification Service. Such people are out there but would be hard to find. When you look at the qualifications of the people doing the training at pharmacovigilance conferences and in-house, these are the sorts of factors that should influence your decision to attend – do the presenters have the right experience so that my staff and I will learn what we need to in these sessions?

They help bring a continuous and effective coding system in the industry, as they help code every data accurately and consistently. Once a certain doctor diagnoses a patient and prescribes them medication and a course of treatment, this particular data would need to be delivered to the insurance company, so that they can plan a reimbursement, or to researchers, for analytical work. The common medical language can be vague and confusing, so to keep the system entirely consistent and regular, medical coders turn the data into medical codes.

Medical coders are known for their keen interest in details so that they are able to recognize a certain aberration from a huge amount of codes effectively. They also should have a particular ethical standard because what they are coding can be highly confidential in nature.

Skills of a Medical Coder

Medical coders are usually trained in medical coding and billing. Training is important because employers tend to ask for a certain technical skill set in the coder, such as:

  • Customer billing
  • CPT coding
  • ICD-10
  • ICD-9
  • HCPCS coding
  • Health IT
  • Medical Coding
  • Inpatient coding and outpatient coding
  • Clinical documentation

Other than these technical skills, a medical coder should also have a researching ability, communication skills, knowledge of computers, analytical skills, and efficient time management.

Medical Writing

I get one question repeatedly from new medical writers wanting to be trained. They are often not sure of what direction they want to take, so they ask: “Should I take a lot of medical writing courses and learn everything, or should I specialize in a specific type of medical writing?” It’s really two questions, and let me separate them for you. The first question is, “What kind of training should I take?” The second question is, “Should I be a specialist or generalist?”

Both are good questions, and they are two questions, not one.

My simple and I hope memorable advice is:

Train Broadly, Write Specifically.

When employers or companies look for medical writers, they typically want someone for a specific job, or a specific type of medical writing. They like to hire and work with specialists – people who know the particular field, who are familiar with the literature and practice around specific ailments, populations, pharmaceuticals, or devices. Everyone wants someone who knows what they are talking about, in order to get the most bang for the buck out of an author.

So, when you are presenting yourself for work, it’s best to be the specialist who really knows what they are talking about.

What does medical writer do?

Medical writing involves writing scientific documents of different types which include regulatory and research-related documents, disease or drug-related educational and promotional literature, publication articles like journal manuscripts and abstracts, content for healthcare websites, health-related magazines or news

Now, of course you can have specialties in a number of different areas. It’s good to do that. That way you can have broader appeal to potential employers or buyers of your content. But they are only interested in the specialty relevant to THEM. Present yourself through your payer’s eyes. Medical Writing training Be the specialist THEY want.

Now, with regard to training, think about training broadly.

How can I improve my medical writing?

How to improve your writing: suggestions from a medical writer

  1. Keep it simple. Medical research is complicated and highly technical, as is the jargon used to report it. …
  2. Write for your reader. Your manuscript is not just a record of what you have done, it should inform your reader of your findings and conclusions. …
  3. Be consistent. …
  4. Less is more. …
  5. Use visual elements. …
  6. Follow instructions.

There are about 7 different kinds of medical writing:

  1. Consumer Health Writing
  2. Abstracts and Posters
  3. Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  4. Grant Writing
  5. Scientific Journal Writing
  6. Regulatory Writing
  7. Continuing Medical Education (CME) Writing
  8. Is medical writing hard?

However, medical writers need to understand more about a therapeutic area and use that in-depth knowledge to relay information about it, so getting in as a freelancer—especially one with no medical background—can be tougher. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. You can be well known in one or two kinds. But you should train broadly.

That means Abstract and Poster Writing, and Biostatistics and Epidemiology skills are broadly applicable to Consumer Health Writing, Scientific Journal Writing, CME Writing, and Regulatory Writing.

And Scientific Journal Writing, Regulatory Writing and CME Writing require similar discipline in gathering evidence, performing analysis, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.

So, when you think of getting trained, train broadly. Consider packages of Medical Writing Training.

THE ROLE OF OBJECTIVES IN MEDICAL WRITING TRAINING

Educational Objectives are among the most important steps in planning a Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development (CME/CPD) Medical Writing training activity. They come from the Needs Assessment, which specifies what physicians need to learn to help improve patient health outcomes. Objectives therefore delineate what physicians will learn by participating in the activity. The Objectives guide the choice of faculty, content, and act as a frame of reference for the activity planners between their intention of the planners and what learning gets accomplished

Objectives are also used when a program is evaluated, to determine if the CME/CPD activity is successful — that is, does the learner’s actual practice improve when they return to their clinical setting. Thus, in the CME/CPD planning process, content is not created in a vacuum, but rather is designed and created with the purpose of meeting the Educational Objectives of the program.

THREE TYPES OF OBJECTIVES FOR PHYSICIAN LEARNING

Educational Objectives should be specific, concrete, and succinct. They can focus on a variety of “measurable” measures: knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practice (long-term future behavior). There are three main types of Objectives, only one of which is truly applicable for CME/CPD: Medical Writing training

Learning Objectives – state what the learner will learn or understand by the end of a learning activity.

Instructional (teaching) Objectives – state what the instructor intends to accomplish during a learning activity. This type of Objective describes a process, not an outcome, and is helpful when stated at the beginning of a program.

Behavioral Objectives – state what the learner might do differently (behavioral change) because of what has been learned. This is the type of Objective that must be used to Medical Writing training formulate Educational Objectives for continuing medical education (CME/CPD) programs and is the kind medical writers are most likely to be asked to create.

COMMON ERRORS IN CME/CPD EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Occasionally, clients (and even some CME/CPD professionals) will call all Educational Objectives ‘Learning Objectives’ because they do not know the distinction among the three types. It is also somewhat common to see Learning Objectives formulated for CME/CPD activities instead of Behavioral Objectives. CME Medical Writing training certification no longer cares about what the learner will learn. Certification focuses on what the learner will do with the new knowledge or skil. With increasing focus on practice change then, CME/CPD providers are switching to the use of Behavioral Objectives to describe what learners may accomplish by participating in their programs.

OBJECTIVES and the CME NEEDS ASSESSMENT:

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE WRITING

Before writing Objectives, it is helpful to ask a few questions of those involved in planning the activity. Ideally, these questions will have been answered in a well-designed Needs Assessment (a topic for another article,) Medical Writing training but if the Needs Assessment has not been completed, or done well, these questions can assist with creating strong Objectives and Program Design. These questions can act as a guide to assuring the Objectives are more meaningful to both the program developers and the learners.

Ask the Client: What course of action, outcome, or change does the Needs Assessment indicate is necessary? Or does the planning committee believe is necessary?

Ask the Faculty: What information can you share to enhance the intended audience’s understanding and competency?

Ask the Target Audience: What do you want the participants to take away from this activity? What would you like to take away from this activity? What do you need that will enhance your practice?

This is the overview of writing Medical Writing training Educational Objectives, which is one important piece of designing an educational activity for health professionals. Objectives are one of about seven steps in creating a program, which when completed, create a daisy-chain of steps the create a successful online presentation or live event, for both the CME provider and the target audience.

IP-DRG TRAINING ON LIVE PROJECTS

If you love helping people but would rather deal with details behind the scenes than in the waiting room, medical billing/coding schools could be just what the doctor ordered for your career.

Medical Billing and Coding Roles IP-DRG TRAINING ON LIVE PROJECTS

Medical billing/coding schools lead to one of the health occupations in which there is little or no direct contact with patients. But it’s not an easy job — accuracy is essential, as these professionals assemble patients’ health information, ensuring that medical charts are complete and that all pertinent information is in the computer.

Medical records technicians may also specialize in coding information for insurance billing purposes. They assign a code to each diagnosis and procedure, consulting classification manuals and relying on their knowledge of disease processes. Using computer software, medical billing technicians assign the patient to a diagnosis-related group (DRG), which determines the amount the hospital will be reimbursed if the patient is covered by insurance programs using the DRG system.

Once you’ve received medical billing and coding training from one of the 184 associate degree programs offered at medical billing/coding schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), you may take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam given by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

For insurance billing, you may take the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist exam, a national credential awarded by the Certifying Board of the American Medical Billing Association. Certifications in coding are available either from AHIMA (Certified Coding Associate, Certified Coding Specialist, and Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based) or from the American Academy of Professional Coders (Certified Professional Coder, Certified Professional Coder-Hospital, Certified Professional Coder-Payer).

On the Job in Medical Billing and Coding

Median annual earnings in the medical billing/coding field were $25,590 in 2004, with the highest 10 percent earning more than $41,760. That same year, about 159,000 jobs were held by medical records and health information technicians.

Job prospects continue to look good for those with medical billing and coding training. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical billing/coding professionals is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014. Technicians with a strong background in medical coding will be in particularly high demand due to the increased amount of paperwork involved in filing insurance claims.

How do you code anesthesia time?
The proper way to report anesthesia time is to record it in minutes. One unit of time is recorded for each 15-minute increment of anesthesia time. For example, a 45-minute procedure, from start to finish, would incur three units of anesthesia time. Being exact is required, since Medicare pays to one-tenth of a unit
